Ice Skating in Singapore

Kallang is the rink families mean when they say “ice skating” on a rainy afternoon. Sessions run in blocks, reported as about two hours, with room for on the order of 150 skaters. Gloves and socks are compulsory. [2]
Ice Penguin describes itself as a training ground: a 1,000 square foot synthetic surface, lessons from beginner level, safety gear, and a parent allowed onto the rink in shoe covers to help a young child. [1] The surface is slower than ice, which is the point of a first lesson. It is not a substitute for a long public skate.
Which one to pick
- A child who has never stood in skates: Ice Penguin, or a Kallang lesson, not a crowded Saturday public session as the first hour.
- A confident skater who wants real ice and a longer block: Kallang, on a weekday afternoon if you can leave school in time.
- A birthday: ask either operator about a private booking. A public session is shared with everyone who queued.
- Jurong: there is no replacement rink in the west. Budget the trip to Stadium or Clarke Quay.
If the outing is really “somewhere cool and indoors” and nobody wants skates, an indoor playground is the better hour. Skating is a skill session with a queue, a boot that hurts, and a fall.
How long a session runs
Visitor reports put Kallang’s public block at about two hours and Ice Penguin’s open skate at about one hour. Treat both as a guide. The operator’s board is the rule, and a tired child can leave early. [2] [3]
Reported public-session length
Hire skates come in limited sizes. Arrive at the start of a Kallang session, not halfway, if a child wears a very small or very large shoe. Figure skates and hockey skates are different. Ask which pair the public session issues.
A first visit with children

- Socks that reach above the boot. Bare ankles are how the hire skate rubs.
- Gloves. A bare hand on ice, or on another skater, is a cut waiting.
- A thin jacket. The mall is air-conditioned. The ice is colder than the mall.
- Helmet if you own one, especially for a first real-ice session. Ask Kallang whether they hire helmets that day.
- One adult on the ice with a beginner, if the rink allows it. At Ice Penguin that adult uses shoe covers. At Kallang the adult needs skates and a ticket.
- Leave when the child is cold or crying. The unused minutes are cheaper than a twisted ankle from one more lap.
School-holiday weeks and rainy Saturdays are the busy ones. The 2026 and 2027 calendars show when every primary school is out. A term-time Sunday morning is the quieter skate.
A child who would rather spend the afternoon on schoolwork can put the same hour into English. Situational writing is one timed piece, on the situational writing page. Tutor Circle can match a tutor for a weekday that is not the skating day. Parents pay the tutor. WhatsApp +65 9628 4702.
Questions parents ask
Where can you ice skate in Singapore?
Two public options are open. Kallang Ice World, on level 3 of Leisure Park Kallang at 5 Stadium Walk, is a real-ice rink with walk-in sessions. Ice Penguin, at Clarke Quay Central, 6 Eu Tong Sen Street, is a synthetic rink of about 1,000 square feet for lessons and open skating. The Rink at JCube in Jurong East closed in August 2023.
Is Kallang Ice World real ice?
Yes. Kallang Ice World is a refrigerated ice rink. Ice Penguin uses a synthetic surface, which its own site describes as a place to learn balance before moving to real ice. Gloves and socks are required at Kallang. Ice Penguin includes skates and allows one accompanying parent onto the surface in shoe covers.
Do you need to book?
Kallang Ice World is walk-in and first come, with a limited number of skaters in each session, so weekends fill. Ice Penguin asks you to book, and its site tells families to arrange lessons ahead. Session times and prices change. Read the board at Kallang, or the booking page at Ice Penguin, on the day you go.
Can beginners and young children skate?
Both places teach beginners. Ice Penguin is set up for children, with a parent allowed on the synthetic surface in shoe covers. A first session on real ice at Kallang is colder and faster. Take the lesson if the child has never worn skates. Hockey skates and figure skates are different boots. Ask which one the session hires out.
What should we bring?
Socks that cover the ankle, a jacket or a thick long-sleeve shirt, and gloves. Kallang sells gloves and socks if you forget them. Tie long hair. Leave the stroller at the side, not on the ice. A child who is shivering after twenty minutes is finished, even if the session has time left.
