Home Tuition vs Tuition Centre: Which Fits Your Child?
13 October 2026 · Tutor Circle
A tuition centre sells a seat in a class. Home tuition sells one hour with one tutor. The centre is often cheaper per month and better when your child keeps up. One-to-one is the better buy when the class has moved on and your child has not. The checklist at the end works for both.

- Centre
- Shared class, fixed time, monthly fee, friends in the room
- Home, 1-to-1
- The tutor sees the working, the slot can move, you pay by the hour
- P6 part-time, a month
- About $180–240 for four 1.5-hour lessons
- Choose 1-to-1 when
- The gap is specific and the class pace is wrong
- Choose a centre when
- The child is near the class pace and likes the group
Cost, attention, flexibility, accountability

| Tuition centre | Home tuition, 1-to-1 | |
|---|---|---|
| What you pay | A monthly fee for a seat. Materials are sometimes extra | An hourly rate. P6 part-time about $180–240 a month. P6 ex-MOE about $360–510 |
| Attention | The teacher splits the hour. A shy child can hide | The whole hour is this child. There is nowhere to hide a blank method |
| Flexibility | The slot is the slot. Miss it and you may get a recording, or nothing | You can move a lesson. You also have to be home, or online, when it happens |
| Accountability | A progress report, sometimes generic | You can ask what was taught today and see the exercise book |
| Peers | Useful when the child works better beside friends | No classmates. Some children miss that, and then drift |
| Travel | You travel to the branch | The tutor travels to you, or the lesson is online |
The monthly home figures are hourly rate × 1.5 × 4, from the 2026 rate table. [1] A centre at $280 a month for a two-hour class of eight is not “cheaper teaching” until you notice your child may get a few minutes of the teacher’s eye. It can still be the right product. It is the wrong product if the reason you signed up was a topic the child does not understand.
Which child fits which
Pick from the child’s last script, not from a neighbour’s result. The way to read that script is on the EOY recovery plan.
- Choose a centre when the child is close to the class pace, likes seeing friends, and the problem is practice rather than a missing method.
- Choose one-to-one when whole questions are blank on one topic, or when the child will not ask in front of eight people.
- Choose one-to-one, at home, for a younger child who will not sit through a two-hour class after school.
- Choose online one-to-one for a Sec 3 or JC student who can work on a shared screen and would lose an hour to travel.
- Use both only if the two adults are teaching the same method. Two methods for the same topic is how a child stops trusting either.
Tutor Circle’s side of this comparison is the one-to-one match. Parents pay the tutor. There is no parent agency fee on top of the rate. [2] A centre can still be the better classroom for a particular child. The honest test is the four-lesson review below, whoever you hire.
A checklist for any tutor
Use this for a centre teacher you are about to rely on, and for a home tutor. Four “no” answers is a reason to keep looking.
| Ask | A useful answer |
|---|---|
| Which paper have you taught at this level, this year? | A named paper and level, not “all levels” |
| What will the first four lessons cover? | A topic taken from your child’s script |
| What is the rate, the length, and the payment day? | Numbers, written down. Home tuition: see the rate table |
| What happens if someone is ill? | A make-up rule you can accept |
| How will we know it is working? | A date, four lessons out, when you look at the book together |
| Can we stop if it is the wrong fit? | Yes, without a long lock-in |
Profiles from a match should arrive with the level and the rate visible. If the first name is wrong, ask for another. That is a normal part of hiring, not a failure. The request form is the same one the other guides on this site point to.
Questions parents ask
Is home tuition better than a tuition centre?
It is better when the child needs a diagnosis and a repaired topic, or when the class at a centre is moving on while your child is still lost. A centre is a better fit when the child works well beside friends, needs a fixed weekly slot, and is roughly at the pace of the class. Many families use a centre for one subject and a home tutor for the subject that is actually behind.
Which is cheaper?
A centre’s monthly fee is often lower than a one-to-one tutor because the teacher’s hour is shared. Divide that fee by the minutes your child spends with the teacher, not by the time they sit in the room. Home tuition is an hourly rate. A P6 part-time tutor at $30–40 an hour, for 1.5 hours a week, is about $180–240 a month. An ex-MOE teacher at the same length is about $360–510. Those bands are on the 2026 rate table.
How do I vet a home tutor?
Ask which paper they have taught at this level, look at one marked piece of your child’s work they are willing to discuss, agree the hourly rate and the lesson length in writing, and set a review after four lessons. A tutor who will not say what the first four lessons are for is a weaker bet than a dearer tutor who will.
Does Tutor Circle charge parents an agency fee?
No. Parents pay the tutor for lessons conducted. Tutor Circle matches the tutor. If the first tutor is the wrong fit, ask for another name. There is no lock-in that forces the family to continue.
Can lessons be online instead of at home?
Yes. The hourly bands are the same. Online removes travel and can suit an older student. A younger child who cannot sit at a screen for 90 minutes usually does better with the tutor in the room. Say which you want on the request.
