My Child Did Badly in the EOY: A Recovery Plan for 2027

13 October 2026 · Tutor Circle

A weak year-end exam is information, and it is arriving now. Read the paper before you hire anyone. A page of blanks on one topic is a gap. Marks dropped in the last step, on topics the child can do at the table, are exam technique. The 2026 year-end holiday, 21 November to 31 December, is long enough to repair one of those. It is not long enough to repair four subjects at once.

How to read the result

The letter grade is the last thing to discuss. Open the script. Ask the child, on three questions they got wrong, “Did you know how to start?” Write the answer down. You are sorting, not lecturing. A child who has just been told the year went badly will say “I was careless” because that sentence ends the conversation. Careless is sometimes true. It is not the diagnosis until you have seen the working.

School is still in session through 20 November. [1] Use the remaining school weeks to ask the teacher which topic will be assumed in January. Then stop collecting opinions. One teacher comment plus the script is enough to choose the holiday subject.

December teaching fixes the left column. Timed practice fixes the right. Most scripts are a mix. Weight the plan toward the column with more marks.

Primary math gaps often sit in the heuristics, especially model drawing and before-after. Worked examples of the twelve methods are on the PSLE math heuristics page. A PSLE score itself is not this school paper. [3] If you are converting marks to AL for a picture of the national bands, use the calculator on school-paper marks only as a rough sense of the band. School papers are not PSLE papers.

The December plan

Four working weeks on one subject. The parent’s job is the calendar, not a second teacher for every page.

The holiday is 21 November to 31 December. [1] [2] That is about six weeks, with Christmas week inside it. Plan four working weeks and one quiet week. Protect the quiet week on the calendar now, or it will be filled with make-up lessons.

Now, while school is onSort the script. Tell the child the one topic. Do not announce four tutors.
Last school weeksTen minutes on that topic inside homework. Ask the teacher if the January topic is the same one.
Holiday week 1Re-teach the topic from a clean example. The child explains it back before doing questions.
Holiday week 2Short sets. Mark them the same day. Keep an error list of five lines, not a new stack of books.
Holiday week 3If the script was a gap, stay on the topic. If it was technique, sit one timed section.
Holiday week 4Redo only the errors. Stop adding topics.
The quiet weekNo new tuition. Sleep, and one light review if the child asks.

What to skip

  • A centre that starts a full syllabus preview in the same week you are still reading the script.
  • Past-year papers as the first activity, when the child could not start the topic.
  • A tutor for every subject that scored below the class average. Average is not the same as a gap.

What to arrange for 2027

Book the weekly tutor for term time once the holiday subject is clear. Say the level, the topic the script exposed, and the budget. Rates by level and tutor type are on the 2026 rate table. A P6 child heading into the PSLE year needs the specialist on the weak paper, not a general homework sitter, unless the script showed the work was never finished at all.

A Sec 2 child whose EOY math is weak is also making a combination decision. Read A Math and pure science before you promise Additional Mathematics as the recovery goal. Catching E Math is the prior job.

Questions parents ask

What should I do if my child failed the EOY?

Read the script with your child before you book anything. Sort the lost marks into questions they could not start, and questions they started and then slipped. A cluster of blanks on one topic is a gap in understanding. Marks lost in the last step, across many topics, are an exam-technique problem. The December holiday is for the first kind. A longer timed paper is for the second.

Should we start tuition in every weak subject?

No. Pick the one subject that blocks next year. For a primary child that is often Math or English. For a Sec 2 child it may be the subject that decides the Sec 3 combination. A second subject can wait until the first one has a weekly routine that is actually happening.

When is the December holiday in 2026?

For MOE primary and secondary schools, the year-end holiday is 21 November to 31 December 2026. School ends on 20 November. The weeks before that, while school is still on, are for reading the paper and fixing one topic inside ordinary homework. The holiday is the longer block.

Will a bad EOY change the PSLE score?

The EOY is a school exam. The PSLE score is the national paper. A weak Primary 5 EOY is a warning about topics, not a PSLE result. A weak Primary 6 EOY, this late in the year, is information about what the remaining weeks can still repair. School promotion rules are the school’s. Ask the form teacher before you treat a single grade as a decision about next year.

How many holiday lessons are enough?

Four to eight lessons on one subject is a recovery block. Daily three-hour sessions through December usually collapse in the second week. One hour, four days a week, on the topic the script showed was blank, is the plan that families finish.
