Sec 1 Preparation: What to Do in the Year-End Holidays
13 October 2026 · Tutor Circle
The useful Sec 1 preparation, after a child leaves P6, is short and specific: learn to write a bar model as algebra, see how lower secondary science uses units and experiments, and know what G1, G2 and G3 mean for the subjects on the posting. The 2026 year-end holiday for primary schools runs from 21 November to 31 December.

- Holiday
- 21 November to 31 December 2026 for primary schools
- Math jump
- From bar models to letters and linear equations
- Science jump
- One subject, with units, symbols and experiment write-ups
- Subject levels
- G1, G2 or G3, guided by the Posting Group
- A useful block
- Four to six lessons on the one subject that worries you
When the holiday actually starts
PSLE written papers are in September. Results come later, usually in the second half of November. MOE’s 2026 calendar puts the primary year-end holiday at 21 November to 31 December. [3] The weeks that matter for Sec 1 are the ones after the result slip, before school in January 2027. Dates for the whole year are on the 2026 school holidays page. [4]
Do not spend those weeks re-sitting PSLE papers. The score is already the score. Use it to see the Posting Group, then spend the time on the first topics Sec 1 will assume.
Sec 1 math: algebra

Primary problem sums lean on models. Sec 1 writes the same relationship with a letter. A child who is fluent at heuristics can still freeze when the worksheet says “let the number be x”. The twelve PSLE heuristics stay useful. Algebra is the new language on top of them.
What to practise
- Like terms: 3x + 2x is 5x. 3x + 2 is not 5x.
- Substitution: if x is 4, what is 2x + 1?
- One-step and two-step equations: 4x = 48, then 2x + 3 = 15.
- A word sentence written as an equation before any calculating.
How science is taught differently
Primary science is organised in themes such as cycles, systems and energy, and many answers are still in words. Lower secondary science keeps the ideas and asks for measurements, symbols and a write-up. It is one subject at G1, G2 or G3. Physics, Chemistry and Biology as separate subjects come later, at the Sec 3 combination. That choice is on the Sec 3 subject combinations page.
| Primary | Sec 1 | What to try in December |
|---|---|---|
| “Explain why the ice melted.” | State the temperature change and the unit. | Write °C next to every temperature |
| A labelled diagram is often enough. | Name the variable you changed and the one you measured. | Rewrite one school experiment in four lines: aim, changed, measured, result |
| Everyday words for materials. | Chemical names and simple word equations appear. | Learn ten names the Sec 1 notes will use, such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, acid |
What Full SBB means for subject levels
Express, Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) are no longer the posting labels. The PSLE Score posts a student through Posting Group 1, 2 or 3, and that group guides the level of most subjects at the start of Sec 1. [1] [2]
| PSLE Score | Posting Group | Most subjects start at |
|---|---|---|
| 4–20 | 3 | G3 |
| 21–22 | 2 or 3 | G2 or G3 |
| 23–24 | 2 | G2 |
| 25 | 1 or 2 | G1 or G2 |
| 26–30, with AL7 or better in English and Mathematics | 1 | G1 |
G3 is mapped from the old Express standard, G2 from N(A), and G1 from N(T). They are subject levels, not a new name for the whole child. A student posted through Posting Group 1 or 2 can take English, Mathematics, Science or Mother Tongue at a more demanding level when that PSLE subject was strong. [1] Form classes are mixed. The level can be adjusted later by the school, from school results, so a December label is a starting point.
Work out the score on the PSLE AL calculator, then read the cut-off ranges on the secondary school cut-off guide when you are choosing a school. Subject level and school choice are related, and they are not the same decision.
A six-week plan
Count from the result slip, not from 21 November, if results land after the holiday has started. Six weeks is the shape. Shorten it rather than filling every morning.
| Week | Math, 25 minutes | Science or English, 25 minutes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Five model-to-equation questions | Read the Posting Group and the subject levels |
| 2 | Like terms and substitution | One experiment rewritten with units |
| 3 | Two-step equations | Ten science words used in a sentence each |
| 4 | Word problems written as equations first | A page of Sec 1 English, noticing the longer answers |
| 5 | Mixed review of the four math skills | Ask the secondary school which textbook they use |
| 6 | Stop new topics. Redo the questions that were wrong | Pack the routine: sleep, the route to school, the CCA form |
English and Mother Tongue do not need a holiday crash course unless the result slip shows a clear gap. A child moving into G3 math with shaky algebra gains more from those six weeks than from a general “Sec 1 head start” that tries to teach every subject.
Questions parents ask
What should a P6 child do in the holidays before Sec 1?
After PSLE results, use the rest of the year-end holiday for three things: turn bar models into simple equations, read one lower-secondary science topic with units and a short experiment write-up, and learn which subject level the Posting Group points to. In 2026 the primary year-end holiday runs from 21 November to 31 December. Secondary 1 starts in January 2027.
Is Sec 1 math the same as PSLE math?
The numbers and the model drawing still matter. Sec 1 adds algebra: letters, like terms, substitution and linear equations. A child who can only solve “3 times as many” with bars will meet the same idea written as 3x. The holiday job is that translation, not a race through the whole Sec 1 textbook.
What are G1, G2 and G3 subjects?
Under Full Subject-Based Banding, each subject is offered at G1, G2 or G3. G3 is the most demanding and is mapped from today’s Express standard. G2 is mapped from N(A), and G1 from N(T). A student’s Posting Group, which comes from the PSLE Score, guides the level of most subjects at the start of Sec 1. Students posted through Posting Group 1 or 2 can take English, Mathematics, Science or Mother Tongue at a more demanding level if that PSLE subject was strong.
Does Sec 1 science split into Physics, Chemistry and Biology?
Not as three separate subjects. Lower secondary science is still one subject, taken at G1, G2 or G3. It is more quantitative than primary science: units, symbols, and a written experiment. The choice between pure sciences and combined science is a Sec 3 decision.
When should we request a Sec 1 tutor?
After the PSLE Score is known, and before January, if you already know the subject that worries you. Name Sec 1, the subject, and whether you expect G2 or G3. A head-start block of four to six lessons in December is enough to begin algebra. It does not need to cover the year.
