Ex-MOE vs Full-Time vs Student Tutor: Is It Worth Paying More?
13 October 2026 · Tutor Circle
At Primary 6, an ex-MOE teacher in Tutor Circle’s October 2026 assignments is commonly $60–85 an hour. A part-time tutor at the same level is $30–40. The higher rate is worth paying when the child is losing marks on the way the subject is examined. It is wasted when the child needs a calm weekly hour to finish work they already understand.

- Student
- Still in JC, poly or university. Lower part of the part-time band. Best for practice and homework
- Part-time
- Teaches alongside other work. The rate most families agree. P6: $30–40/h
- Full-time
- Tuition is the main job. More daytime slots. P6: $45–55/h
- Ex-MOE
- Current or former MOE school teacher. P6: $60–85/h. Sec 3: $65–95/h
- A P6 month
- Part-time about $180–240. Ex-MOE about $360–510, for 1.5 hours × 4
- Who to hire
- Match the tutor to the gap, then cap the budget on the request
The price gap
These are Tutor Circle’s own October 2026 bands, the same numbers on the home tuition rates page. They are ranges from assignments, not a menu. A quoted rate can sit anywhere inside the band. [1]
| Level | Student | Part-time | Full-time | Ex-MOE |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| P1–P4 | $25–30 | $25–35 | $40–45 | $55–70 |
| P5–P6 | $30–35 | $30–40 | $45–55 | $60–85 |
| Sec 1–2 | $30–35 | $30–40 | $45–50 | $60–85 |
| Sec 3 | $35–40 | $35–45 | $45–60 | $65–95 |
Top of the P6 hourly band, by tutor type
Four lessons of 1.5 hours turn the P6 part-time band into about $180–240 a month, and the ex-MOE band into about $360–510. Parents pay the tutor. Tutor Circle does not add a parent agency fee. [2]

What each tutor is for

Student tutor
Still in JC, polytechnic or university. Often close enough to the syllabus to remember which question types feel unfair. A good fit when the child is not lost, and the weekly job is practice, marking, and someone who will notice a careless slip. A weak fit for Additional Mathematics, a pure science the tutor has not taken, or a child who needs the concept rebuilt from the definition.
Part-time tutor
Graduated, or teaching beside another job. This is the profile most assignments close on, because the supply is widest and the rate is the one a monthly budget can hold for a year. Evenings fill first. Name a second evening if the first is a CCA night.
Full-time tutor
Tuition is the work. Weekday afternoons are more realistic, and the tutor usually arrives with a set of worksheets rather than the school homework alone. This is the step up when a part-time tutor has been steady and the grade has not moved, or when the subject is new and the child needs more than one hour of explanation a week.
Ex-MOE teacher
A current or former MOE school teacher. The premium is for someone who has taught the syllabus in a classroom and knows which sentence earns the mark. A current teacher may only be free after duties, so the calendar can be the constraint even when the budget is not. Ask whether the person is still in a school before you plan a 3.30pm slot.

When the higher rate earns it

| The gap you can see | A type that usually fits | Why |
|---|---|---|
| P3 homework is unfinished, concepts are intact | Student or part-time | The hour is supervision and correction |
| P5–P6 problem sums fail when the model is not obvious | Full-time, or ex-MOE if the scripts are stuck | Someone has to reteach the translation into a method |
| Science ideas are right and the sentences lose the mark | Ex-MOE or a specialist full-time science tutor | The loss is phrasing against the concept, which is on the science page |
| Sec 1 algebra: letters, negatives, brackets | Part-time or full-time who teaches lower secondary | A patient weekly rebuild beats a famous name |
| Sec 3 Additional Math or a pure science, from scratch | Full-time specialist or ex-MOE | The subject is new and the later papers assume it |
The science phrasing problem is described on the PSLE science open-ended page. The algebra jump is on the Sec 1 algebra page. A centre’s monthly fee is a different product; that comparison is on home tuition versus a tuition centre.
What to ask before you agree

- Which level and subject have you taught in the last 12 months, and can you show a recent worksheet?
- Are you still in a school, and which evenings are actually free in term time?
- Will you mark the school homework, or bring your own questions, or both?
- What is the hourly rate, the lesson length, and the payment day?
- What will the first four lessons cover, in one sentence each?
Put the budget on the request. Coordinators match inside it. If the budget reaches a student tutor and the subject is Additional Mathematics, say that plainly. You will get an honest reply about whether that profile exists.
Questions parents ask
Is an ex-MOE tutor worth the higher rate?
It is worth it when the gap is the syllabus as it is taught and examined in school: a P6 child losing marks on how an answer is phrased, or a Sec 3 student starting Additional Mathematics or a pure science. In Tutor Circle’s October 2026 bands, a P6 ex-MOE teacher is $60–85 an hour against $30–40 for a part-time tutor. It is a poor use of the higher rate when the real gap is unfinished homework at P3.
What is the difference between a full-time tutor and a part-time tutor?
A full-time tutor’s main work is tuition, so weekday daytime slots are easier to get and the worksheet set is usually fuller. A part-time tutor teaches alongside another job, or has graduated and takes some evenings. Part-time is the largest group in these assignments, and the band most families actually agree. At P6 that band is $30–40 an hour. Full-time at the same level is $45–55.
Are student tutors good enough for PSLE?
A student tutor who is still in JC, polytechnic or university can be a strong weekly teacher for a child who understands the topic and needs practice finished properly. For a P6 child whose problem sums collapse under time, or whose science answers miss the concept, families in these assignments usually move to a full-time tutor or an ex-MOE teacher. The student figure at P6 is about $30–35 an hour, the lower portion of the part-time band.
How much more is an ex-MOE tutor per month?
For four lessons of 1.5 hours, a P6 part-time tutor at $30–40 an hour is about $180–240 a month. A P6 ex-MOE teacher at $60–85 is about $360–510. The gap is roughly $180–270 a month for the same length. That arithmetic is on the home tuition rates page.
Can a current MOE teacher tutor on weeknights?
Some can, after school duties. Many cannot offer a 4pm slot. If the only window is a weekday afternoon, say so on the request. A full-time tutor is often the profile that can actually take that hour. A current teacher’s higher rate does not create a free slot that school duties already occupy.
