How to Write an Argumentative Essay

13 October 2026 · Tutor Circle

An argumentative essay answers a question with a position, reasons, examples, and a reply to a real objection. In Singapore, secondary students meet it in O-Level English Language when Section C asks them to argue. Junior college students meet it as H1 General Paper Paper 1, which is an argument from the first minute. The method below is for those two papers.

O-Level English and General Paper both ask for a position, reasons, and a reply to an objection. The word limits are different.

Which paper you are actually sitting

The same word, “essay”, covers three different tasks in Singapore schools. Writing the wrong one is the most common way to lose the question.

O-Level details follow syllabus 1184 as listed by SEAB for 2026 school candidates. [1] General Paper details follow syllabus 8881. [2] PSLE English is one of the four subjects inside the PSLE Score, and it is a different exam. [3] The scoring system is explained on the PSLE page.

Where the marks sit

General Paper Paper 1 is marked out of 50. Content is 30. Language is 20. A fluent essay that never answers the question can still fail the larger slice. An accurate essay full of broken sentences loses the 20.

Syllabus 8881. Content 30, language 20. The paper is 1 hour 30 minutes for one essay of 500 to 800 words, chosen from eight questions.

O-Level Section C is 30 marks in total. The published content bands for how fully the task is addressed top out at 9–10. Language, including organisation, clarity and accuracy, carries the larger share of that section. A paragraph plan helps the content band. Sentences the reader can follow help the language mark. You need both, and Paper 1 still has editing and situational writing before you reach the essay, inside the same 1 hour 50 minutes. [1]

A structure that answers the question

Use this shape unless the question clearly wants something else. Two reasons are enough when each one is developed. A third reason, undeveloped, usually repeats the first.

How the paragraphs depend on each other

PositionReason 1Reason 2ObjectionJudgement

The objection is part of your argument. A paragraph that only says “some people disagree” does not answer them.

Examples that count

An example is a specific case you can explain: a school rule, a local policy, a study, a book, a company, an event. “Many countries” is not an example. For General Paper, the syllabus expects awareness of local, regional and global issues, across society, culture, economics, politics, the arts, science and the environment. [2] A Singapore example plus one from elsewhere is stronger than three sentences that all say “in today’s society”.

A worked plan, on a question students actually face

Question, for practice: “Students should not be given homework on weeknights. Do you agree?” This is a teaching plan, not a model answer to memorise. The homework debate itself is on the homework page.

  • Position: weeknight homework should be short and set for a reason. A ban is too blunt, and an unlimited load is how students stop sleeping.
  • Reason 1: primary-age evidence that more homework raises achievement is weaker than the secondary-age evidence, so a primary weeknight pile is hard to justify.
  • Reason 2: in Singapore the evening is already CCA, travel and a family meal. Homework that assumes a quiet desk and a parent who can teach the subject measures the home, not only the child.
  • Objection: teachers use homework to practise what the lesson started. Reply: that practice can be short, and schools already publish time guides so the load stays bounded.
  • Judgement: agree with a cap and a purpose. Disagree with “no homework” as a slogan and with “as much as possible” as a policy.

If you write this for O-Level, stay inside 350 to 500 words and leave time for the rest of Paper 1. If you write it for General Paper, develop the examples and stay inside 500 to 800 words.

What keeps the mark down

  • Answering a nearby question. “Homework is bad” does not answer “weeknight homework should be banned”.
  • Two paragraphs that make the same point in different adjectives.
  • An objection you invented in order to knock it down in one sentence. Use an objection a reasonable person holds.
  • Examples with no link back to the claim. A story about your uncle is not yet an argument.
  • A conclusion that starts a new topic, or that apologises for the essay.
  • For O-Level, spending the whole 1 hour 50 minutes on Section C and leaving editing and situational writing thin.

How to practise one essay a week

A tutor pointing at a printed essay while a student in school uniform reads it
Write to the word limit under time, then ask a teacher to mark the language. You will not hear your own missing articles.
  • Read the question twice and underline the task words: agree, discuss, how far, should.
  • Spend five to seven minutes on the five-part plan. If you cannot name two different reasons, choose another question.
  • Write to the word limit once a week under timed conditions. Untimed essays teach a pace you will not have.
  • Mark the content yourself first: highlight every sentence that does not serve the question, and cut it.
  • Then get a teacher or a tutor to mark language. You cannot hear your own missing articles.

English tuition and General Paper tuition are the one-to-one routes for this. A tutor should mark the essay you wrote, not only hand you a model. Parents pay the tutor for lessons conducted.

Questions students ask

What is an argumentative essay?

An argumentative essay takes a position on a question and defends it with reasons and examples. It also answers a serious objection. A list of facts about the topic, with no judgement, is a different piece of writing. In Singapore schools the form shows up in O-Level English continuous writing, when the question asks you to argue, and it is the whole of H1 General Paper Paper 1.

How long is an argumentative essay in O-Level English?

For Singapore-Cambridge O-Level English Language, syllabus 1184, Paper 1 Section C asks for 350 to 500 words on one of four topics. The topics may be different kinds of writing, including narrative or argument. The section is worth 30 marks. The content bands for addressing the task go up to 9–10 marks, so language carries the rest of the section. Paper 1 as a whole is 1 hour 50 minutes and includes editing and situational writing before the essay.

How long is the General Paper essay?

H1 General Paper, syllabus 8881 for examination in 2026, sets eight questions. Candidates answer one, in 500 to 800 words, in 1 hour 30 minutes. Content is 30 marks and language is 20, out of 50 for the paper. The questions are on issues of local, regional and global significance. An older syllabus with twelve questions is the wrong paper to practise.

Do Primary 6 students write argumentative essays for the PSLE?

PSLE English continuous writing is usually a narrative or recount from pictures or a given situation, not a General Paper essay. Teaching a Primary 6 child the full JC structure, with a counter-argument in every composition, fights the question in front of them. Argument as a school skill starts properly in secondary English. The PSLE scoring guide is a separate page.

What structure should the essay use?

A position in the introduction, two reasons that are actually different, one real objection with a reply, and a short judgement at the end. Five paragraphs is a usable shape for O-Level. General Paper can use the same shape with more developed examples. The shape is a plan. Markers reward thinking that answers the question, not a fixed number of paragraphs.

Can a tutor mark argumentative essays?

Yes. One-to-one English and General Paper tutors on Tutor Circle can plan a question, mark a timed essay, and show which sentences did not answer the question. Request a tutor for O-Level English or H1 General Paper. Parents pay the tutor. WhatsApp +65 9628 4702.
